The New York Mills Arts Retreat was founded in 1989 by John Davis as a way to expand the cultural and creative opportunities of rural Americans. In 1990 an historic (1885) brick building was donated and the
City of New York Mills contributed $35,000 (the per capita equivalent of Minneapolis
giving $13.7 million dollars) to convert the building into a Cultural Center.
A diverse group of volunteers, ranging from local business people, contractors,
artists, and children, to an architect from the Biosphere II project, to
a visiting portrait artist from New York city, donated over 3,000 hours
to complete the project at less than half the estimated budget.

In 1992, the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center opened with a town parade, street dance, and ribbon-cutting
ceremony.
Today the Center enjoys support from community organizations, the City
of New York Mills, the New York Mills Lion's Club, the MN State Arts Board, the MN Humanities Commission,
and private foundations including the McKnight Foundation and the Jerome Foundation. A broad, national base of volunteers and members make it possible for the Center to
maintain its high level of quality and innovative arts programming.
