Land by Hand: Fiber Artists Explore Place
Jill Lynn, Herman, 2011 Felted wall hanging.
November 16-December 31
Saturday, November 19 from 1-4pm there is a reception featuring a talk by one of the fiber artists 1:30 pm) and a family-friendly arts activity (2:30-4:00pm). These events are free, but we ask that you call ahead to reserve a space in the workshop (218-385-3339).
The exhibition, “Land by Hand: Fiber Artists Explore Place,” showcases innovative work by Minnesota artists using such fiber art processes as felting, tapestry, weaving, batik, basketry, art quilting, beading, sculptural fiber and more. Land is the exhibition’s unifying theme—land as interpreted through the lens of contemporary fiber art. All of the featured works demonstrate the artists' unique relationships to place, which may be expressed subtly or explicitly in the work's content, formal elements, materials or techniques used in its construction.
With a particular emphasis on contemporary approaches to fiber traditions “Land by Hand: Fiber Artists Explore Place” will become an inspiring arts experience for viewers. “The exhibition’s artists demonstrate deep reverence for the land as well as the historical traditions that inform their work, yet each is adapting materials or processes in a unique way,” says exhibition curator Kimber Olson. “The artists use non-traditional materials or techniques to create work rooted in traditional handcraft forms. Bonnie Wedge weaves recycled aluminum cans into garments for art dolls and Karen Searle combines birch bark with sculptural crochet to create figural pieces.”
Fifteen highly established Minnesota artists were invited to participate in “Land by Hand: Fiber Artists Explore Place” by the exhibition’s curator Kimber Olson. Art quilter Lettie Blackburn of Walker, Minn., is among the artists whose work is featured. Other works include vessels by Sharon Meyer Postance of Meadowlands; “bead paintings” by Jo Wood of Duluth; and batiks by Vernal Bogren Swift, a fiber artist who splits her time between Bovey and an island in the Pacific.

Mary Mortenson, Amber Waves, Vest, 2011(fulled wool, shibori-resist dyed, discharged and over-dyed, needle-felted) and Morgan Clifford, Green, Green, Red, Red, Weaving, 2008 (Leno weave and weft brocade, linen, silk, hemp, nettles, paper, rayon, cotton)
The touring exhibition, “Land by Hand: Fiber Artists Explore Place,” is organized and presented by Textile Center, a national center for fiber art whose mission is to honor textile traditions and promote excellence and innovation in fiber art. Textile Center represents and supports fiber artists working in all forms of textile media including weaving, quilting, knitting, sewing, needlework, lace making, basketry and beading. More information about Textile Center is available at www.TextileCenterMN.org. Textile Center is a fiscal years 2010 and 2011 recipient of an Arts Tour Minnesota grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment passed by a a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
Textile Center executive director Margaret Miller says, “Textile Center received an Arts Tour Minnesota Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, which has been instrumental to the implementation of our touring program. This exhibition supports Textile Center’s mission to educate and generate interest in fiber art by making accessible a broad spectrum of innovative approaches to audiences throughout the state. Textile Center is delighted to present the exhibition ‘Land by Hand: Fiber Artists Explore Place’ to New York Mills and its surrounding communities.”
