About the Theme: “Unfettered”

Defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “not controlled or restricted,” this gallery show calls artists to freely express themselves. Throughout history artists have played a vital role in society as activists – they have used their art to help shine a light on injustice, communicate possibilities, and show a different perspective of the world.

“Unfettered” coincides with the 2024 Great American Think-Off question: “Is freedom of speech worth the cost?”

“To discover the mode of life or of art whereby your spirit could express itself in unfettered freedom.”  — James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

The show “Unfettered” by its very definition is free from restriction. This show is a call for artists to express themselves as artists, as activists, and to explore their artistic freedoms. Artists throughout history have responded to contemporary events and changes in the world. Artists can use their artistic voice to shine a light on societal problems, bring forth ideas, emotions, and new perspectives or express the creativity of the artist. Art and new art styles are constantly being created, boundaries are pushed, old ideals are questioned and new visions created.
