How to Participate

The Think-Off is open to everyone. No academic credentials are required.

Participants are invited to submit an essay of 750 words or less that takes a strong position on the 2026 question, drawing from personal experience, observation, and reflection. There is no fee to enter.

What to Expect

Essays must be submitted by midnight on April 1, 2026. Finalists will be announced on May 1, 2026.

Each of the four finalists receives a $500 cash prize and full support for a weekend in New York Mills, including travel reimbursement, lodging, and meals. Finalists compete for the title of America’s Greatest Thinker during the live Think-Off debate.

The live debate will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in New York Mills, Minnesota.

Whether you submit an essay, attend the live debate, or follow the conversation from afar, the Great American Think-Off invites you to take part in a national tradition of respectful, civil, and idea-driven dialogue.

Past Think-Off questions have explored topics such as truth, democracy, equality, immigration, science, religion, and free speech. Each year, the Think-Off brings people together across differences to listen, reflect, and engage deeply with big ideas.
