What to Expect

Essays must be submitted by midnight on April 1. Entrants will be notified in late April if their essay is selected. Finalists are announced May 1. Finalists travel to New York Mills for the weekend of June 13-15, 2025 to present their arguments in front of a live audience who will vote to determine the winner of each of three rounds of debate.

The Think-Off is designed to celebrate thoughtful engagement and respectful disagreement, making philosophy accessible to all. Past debates over the Think-Off’s 31-year history have tackled topics such as the nature of humankind, the dangers of science vs. religion, and the role of technology in society.

Why the Think-Off Matters

“This year’s question challenges us to examine the foundations of truth in a world that often feels divided by differing perspectives,” said Betsy Roder, Executive Director of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. “The Great American Think-Off is a testament to the power of civil discourse and the enduring human quest for understanding.”

Since 1993, the Think-Off has gained national recognition for its unique approach to philosophy. It has been featured on platforms like C-SPAN, The New York Times, and The Today Show. The contest aims to make philosophy accessible to all and to foster dialogue that transcends social, cultural, and political barriers, resulting in increased understanding and authentic connections.
