Mellie Peach has sewn many diverse things — from lung machine garments where the stitches were so critical that if one was misplaced, the patient could die, to a multitude of relatively ordinary items such as sleeping bags, tents, backpacks, boat covers, and more.
When Mellie’s husband Dave retired in 1995, they sold their Colorado mountain home, bought an RV, and began volunteering with the US National Park Service. Mellie continued to sew as well as work with the Interpretation Division from Alaska to South Texas. Also in 1995, Mellie began quilting — a queen sized Hawaiian Anthurium design that she handstitched on trips to and from Alaska. The rows of stitching for that first quilt were less than 1/2″ apart and the last time she timed one of the quilting rows around the center Anthurium, it took 6 hours. Mellie soon took up machine quilting and continues to create quilts to this day, making up to 100 quilts a year, and even more during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The Cultural Center is so grateful to Mellie for sharing her artistic talent and generously donating this beautiful quilt for us to raffle off for our 2021 Winter Fundraiser. Tickets are available NOW for just $5 each. Drawing will be held at our Winter Fundraiser Event on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at the New York Mills Community Christmas Tree Festival, in the City Hall Ballroom. Need NOT be present to win.
