Chuck Johnson as Abraham Lincoln

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center’s 2024 Performing Arts Series continues on Wednesday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m. with “The Night Before Gettysburg” performance by Chuck Johnson.

This performance is free to attend and open to all!

Chuck Johnson from Perham wrote “The Night Before Gettysburg” in 2021, to compete in a 1-act play contest in Wadena. The play won the competition, and Destination Gettysburg tracked him down a few days later, to inquire about performing in Gettysburg (after finding out about the play via keyword search!).

The play focuses on Lincoln finishing writing The Gettysburg Address the night before in his bedroom. Chuck uses the play to take you inside Lincoln as he struggles with racism, slavery, war carnage, and the deaths of two of his children. It’s a very powerful performance. Don’t miss this powerful piece of living history!

The performance lasts approximately 35 minutes and includes a deeper look at some of the historicals as well as an open Q&A with the audience.

This performance is free to attend and open to all. Light refreshments available. We would like to thank Chuck for sharing his time and talents with us!

Johnson did ten Gettysburg performances in 2022, six in 2023, and has more scheduled for 2024. This is his second performance in New York Mills; he performed at the New York Mills School for students in grades 5-12 on February 16, 2024.
