28th Annual Great American Think-Off Essay Deadline EXTENDED to April 15, 2020

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect daily lives, the Think-Off Committee announces the extension of this year’s essay deadline to April 15, 2020. It is our hope that while everyone adjusts to a new normal, this allows ample time for people to submit an essay answering this year’s question:

Which is more important: to win or to play by the rules?

Everyone likes to win, but at what cost? What if the rules aren’t fair?

What do YOU think?  We want to know!

Base your response on personal observation and experience. Submit your essay of 750 words or less by April 15, 2020, for a chance to win one of four $500 cash prizes and an all-expense-paid weekend in New York Mills, MN.

Four finalists will participate in the live debate on June 13, 2020 to ultimately answer the question, determined by audience vote. The person who best defends their position will be named “America’s Greatest Thinker” for 2020.

A reminder that people of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to submit an essay. There is no fee to enter. This could be a great project for students and learners of all ages to keep their minds sharp during school closures!

The Great American Think-Off is an exhibition of civil disagreement between powerful ideas that connect to your life at the gut level. The Cultural Center, located in the rural farm and manufacturing town of New York Mills, MN (population 1,200) has sponsored this annual philosophy contest since 1993.
