Concert @ 7:30 PM

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center’s 2023 Fall Concert Series continues on Thursday, November 9th with a concert by Skarlett Woods at 7:30 p.m. in the Cultural Center’s intimate visual arts gallery space. All are welcome!

Often known for her way of entwining mesmerizing vocal passages with a 7-string classical guitar groove far advanced beyond your average singer/songwriter, Skarlett Woods brings folk and West Coast Jazz to the same dinner table. Skarlett is gaining a loyal fan base through her melodic and rhythmic style writings that she pairs with Americana & Blue-Eyed Soul. At the heart of it all is a 7-sting Nylon guitar and an unforgettable voice.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door ($2 discount for members), and $5 for students.

Born in the north woods of rural Minnesota, Skarlett Woods is the middle child in a lower-middle-class family who was surrounded by love and support while being immersed in rock n roll, show tunes, pop, and film scores as her musical landscape.

Skarlett has been described as the musician’s songwriter. From a young age, Skarlett hasn’t been shy about living on the fringes of society, holding an eye on social justice issues, and giving a voice to the voices that are rarely heard or seen. She moved to the West Coast for 15 years, stocking up on adventures such as working on a commercial crabbing boat off the Oregon Coast, bicycling 6,000 miles across America, and building two tiny houses- one of which she lived in for 5 years without running water.

The pandemic brought Skarlett back to Minnesota and she hit the ground running. She averaged nearly 200 shows in 2022/2023 while simultaneously recording and producing her Sophomore Album, “Letters To The West” alongside Minneapolis producer/songwriter, Kevin Bowe. Skarlett received winning placements in Duluth’s Dylan Fest Songwriting Contest in both 2022 and 2023 for her songs, “Close To You (Braver These Days)” and “Me, I, Me, Me”. She was also named for the “People’s Choice Award” at Wussow’s Songwriting Contest in 2022.

These successes have garnered her a reputation throughout Minnesota as a stellar performer with a unique singing style that brings a sound baked from places she’s lived and experiences she has had.

Hailed by Dave Franklin, Dancing About Architecture, as a “worthy successor to the likes of James Taylor, Joan Baez or His Bobness,” her heart-felt, unafraid and ‘honest to the core’ style of music lives somewhere between blue-eye Soul, Folk, and Americana, with a hint of hope.

Her Sophomore Album release, “Letters To The West” is filled with some despair, as well as that hint of hope. A concept album of stories and philosophical ponderings from adventures out west and living in Western society, it speaks to the times of today and times of the past while being submerged in a love story of what it means to be human.
