Join us this Fall 2023!

Join us for these arts learning experiences at the Cultural Center this Fall!  We have partnered with Elevate OTC to offer monthly Elevate Exploratories AND we are once again hosting monthly Wednesday Workshops. This means 2 opportunities each month this fall!

Workshops take place at the Cultural Center, in the main floor Gallery space (unless noted otherwise), and are open to ages 16+ (unless noted otherwise).  We ask that you please pre-register so that we can plan adequately; register online using the link for each workshop, or call 218-385-3339 to sign up.

Hooked Rug Basics 

Create a cute teacup garden while you learn the techniques of hooked rug making. This class is designed for beginners. All materials are supplied, though participants may want to bring a good pair of sharp scissors.

MN Landscape Paint & Sip

Sip on your favorite beer while our friendly instructor guides you step-by-step in creating your own masterpiece. It’s all about having fun, trying something new, and enjoying a relaxing evening with friends.

So grab your seat, unwind with a cold beer, and let your creativity flow onto the canvas. No experience necessary – just a thirst for creativity and a love for great company.

Saturday, September 30, 2023 @ 1:00 p.m.
Ben Ranson Guitar Improv Workshop

In this workshop, you will learn how to make up music, on the spot, all by yourself, that sounds beautiful. This will be a hands-on workshop taught by musician Ben Ranson. Participants must bring an acoustic guitar.

To be able to participate in this workshop, you need to know how to play an open E chord and an open D chord. Techniques covered will include drone strings, arpeggios, call and response, simple chord-melody, and pedal point. Each technique is simple enough to be done by a beginner, but can also be done by advanced players.

Wool Felt Coasters

Learn about needle felting! Using flat wool felt, embroidery thread for sewing, and needle felting, we will create some unique pieces for decorating your home or to give as a gift. Use your new creation as a coaster, candle mat, or whatever your creative mind decides!

Thursday, October 19, 2023 @ 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Handbuilding with Clay

This hands-on, beginner workshop will introduce you to the art of hand-building with clay, guiding you through the process of rolling clay into slabs and transforming them into functional and artistic pieces.

Brad will guide you through crafting delightful succulent bowls or customizable coasters, giving you the skills to shape your imagination into functional works of art. By the end of the class, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for ceramics!

Copper Enameling  ***SOLD OUT***

This workshop will introduce you to the colorful world of copper enameling. This very old art form has been practiced for centuries. This process uses high heat to fuse powdered glass to copper to make necklaces, earrings, or perhaps an ornament!

Festive Block Printing

Get into the holiday spirit with our special printmaking event! Join us for an engaging evening of creativity as we dive into the art of linoleum block carving and printing.

No prior experience needed – our expert instructor will guide you through the process of carving intricate designs onto soft linoleum blocks and printing your own set of unique holiday cards.

We regret having to cancel this workshop and apologize for any inconvenience. We are working on rescheduling in 2024 – stay tuned!

Learn to make Finnish pulla bread in time for the holidays at this special collaborative workshop! Gather at the New York Mills Senior Center (12 N Walker Avenue) on Wednesday afternoon. Bring your own mixing bowl if you can, all other supplies will be provided. This workshop fee will help support the Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels program.

Sip & Pour Paint! 

Join us for an exciting session of pour painting where you’ll watch mesmerizing patterns emerge as you let gravity guide the paints and be introduced to the world of fluid art.

Pour, swirl, and watch the colors dance across your canvas, creating unique and vibrant abstract masterpieces. No prior art experience required – just a passion for vibrant colors and a desire to have fun.

To make the experience even more delightful, we’ll be serving a selection of delightful holiday drinks to sip on as you create.
